Focus on Innovative Antibiotic Alternatives

The "Bactolyze" project addressed a highly current and critical research topic: the development of innovative alternatives to conventional antibiotics.

The Münster scientists made a valuable contribution to the targeted fight against bacterial threats. Their focus was on destroying bacterial biofilms and membranes using:

• Endolysins: Specific Enzymes
• Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs)

The study deliberately focused on clinically relevant, enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) bacteria, which gained particular relevance due to the recent EHEC outbreak in Germany.

Special Recognition for Responsible Research

The nominations in the categories “Best Human Practices” and “Best Education” underscore the holistic approach of the project. A particular focus of "Bactolyze" was a responsible research approach that combines science communication, ethics, and practical application.
